The return
Measured against the equinox, as the tropical zodiac is, Saturn takes about 29.42 years to go once around the Sun (NASA's Saturn fact sheet: tropical orbit period 10,746.94 days). When it comes back to the exact degree of the zodiac it held at the moment you were born, that is a Saturn return: a conjunction of the transiting planet with its own natal position. Because Saturn appears to move backwards for several months every year, it usually crosses that degree either once or three times, and the whole passage takes about a year.
The tradition reads it as an audit, not a punishment. Saturn is the planet of time, limit and structure; in the Gnostic map it stands at the boundary of the visible cosmos, the last gate the soul passes on the way in and the first on the way out. Method
The calculator takes Saturn's geocentric ecliptic longitude at the moment of your birth, from the same ephemeris our natal chart tool uses (astronomy-engine, accurate to arcminutes over centuries). It then scans forward day by day for 95 years and marks every moment transiting Saturn crosses that longitude again, refined to the minute. Three things come out of that:
If you do not know your birth time, noon UTC on the birth date is used. Saturn moves at most about an eighth of a degree a day, so the date alone fixes your natal degree to within a few arcminutes and most return dates to within a day. Near a station, where Saturn barely moves, a birth time can shift a date by up to a week, and for about one return in 200 it adds or removes a pass. Give a birth time if you have one. Other calculators may differ from this one by using the sign only, a different orb, or a heliocentric position. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
