Chrism Fast Calendar

The Moon Returns to Your Sign Once a Month

The Carey & Perry tradition places a five-day fast there — the sign before yours, then yours. This calendar finds the exact window from your birth date. Nothing leaves your browser.

You have already felt it, probably without a name for it: a few days each month when appetite goes strange, sleep goes thin, and something in the body asks to be left alone. The old physiological astrology of George Carey and Inez Perry gave those days a schedule. When the transiting Moon enters the sign before your natal Sun sign, a window opens; when it enters your sign, the tradition says a seed is released; when it leaves, the window closes. Roughly five days. This tool does the astronomy so you can do the sitting.

Questions

What people ask before they try it.

What is the sacred secretion?

+

In the early-twentieth-century writings of George W. Carey and Inez Eudora Perry, the sacred secretion — also called the chrism or the oil — is a fluid the tradition says the brain produces once a month and sends down the spine when the Moon returns to your natal Sun sign. Fasting and retention during those days are meant to preserve it so it can rise again. It is a contemplative teaching with its own physiology, not an established medical fact.

Why does the fast begin in the sign before mine?

+

The Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign. The tradition places the seed at the Moon's entry into your Sun sign, so the window opens one sign earlier — a period of preparation while the Moon crosses the previous sign — and closes when the Moon leaves your sign. That gives the familiar five-day window: for a Capricorn Sun, from the Moon entering Sagittarius (240°) to the Moon entering Aquarius (300°).

How long is the fast?

+

Roughly five days — the time the Moon takes to cross two signs. The exact length varies by a few hours from month to month because the Moon's speed varies along its orbit. This calendar computes each window to the minute from real ephemeris rather than from an average.

What if I was born on a cusp?

+

If your birth date falls within two days of a Sun-sign change, the date alone cannot settle your sign. The calendar will ask for your birth time and the timezone of your birthplace, and compute the Sun's actual position at that moment. If you do not know your time, you can choose between the two candidate signs and go by the one you have always used.

Is this safe?

+

A multi-day water fast is not for everyone. Do not attempt it if you are under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding, diabetic, have a history of disordered eating, or take medication that must be taken with food. The tradition itself allows a gentle version — small amounts of berries and soaked nuts. Nothing on this page is medical advice; if you are unsure, talk to a doctor before you begin.
