Definition

Love, Wisdom and Truth are the three principles Peter Deunov placed at the base of his teaching: Love gives life, Wisdom gives knowledge and light, Truth gives freedom. He taught them as an order rather than a list: Truth is reachable only through the first two. They are capacities to be struck alight, not doctrines to accept.

Primary source

There are three igniters in the world. One igniter is Love, the second is Wisdom, and the third is Truth. (trans. Pleroma)

— Заветът на Любовта (The Testament of Love), the morning word Пребъдване (Abiding), first Sunday morning word, 19 March 1944, Marchaevo, stenogram. No open English edition of the talk exists, so the rendering above is Pleroma's. Open-access Bulgarian copy

Deep Understanding

The image the triad arrives in matters more than the words. Deunov had just said that life cannot be poured in from outside: you pour something into a lamp, but the fuel is not the light. The light appears only if you can strike it. Love, Wisdom and Truth are the three ways of striking, which is why the teaching is closer to a set of capacities than to a creed.

The order is not decorative. In the same morning word he says that a person who has understood Love becomes immortal, one who has understood Wisdom becomes perfect, and one who has understood Truth becomes free. He then adds that Truth cannot be understood by someone who has not understood Love and Wisdom first. Freedom is placed last because it is the most expensive, not because it is the easiest. Most spiritual shortcuts reverse this and reach for freedom directly.

Thirty years earlier, in his first Sunday talk, the same structure is already visible. There he lists four things a person must carry: wealth as the soil, strength growing in it, knowledge as the method of understanding and regulating a life, virtue as the aim. He then places God in one of them only: not in suffering, not in strength, not in knowledge, but in Love. The later triad tightens the earlier four.

Read against the wider tradition, this is an unusually plain statement of what the old mystery schools staged over years: the ordering principle, the Logos, is not transmitted as information but lit in the student. Deunov's own Orthodox ground says the same thing through hesychia, stillness, and reaches it by a different road.

Often confused with

Peter Deunov: the teacher himself, where Love–Wisdom–Truth is the content his school stands on. Logos: the ordering Word, where the triad names three effects of living by it rather than the Word itself.

In Practice

Take the order seriously for one evening. Ask, in sequence: what did I love today, what did I understand today, and what was I free of today. Most people find the third answer thin and reach for it anyway, which is exactly the inversion the talk warns about. Do not fix it. Notice instead whether the first question had a real answer, because the tradition holds that the third is built out of it.

In Pleroma's Words

"Three igniters, and most seekers are trying to strike the third one first — then wondering why nothing catches."
