How the tradition reads it

Mercury does not actually move backward. Three times a year the geometry of two orbits makes it appear to, for about three weeks, against the fixed stars. The Hermetic tradition never confused the appearance with the mechanism — and never dismissed the appearance either. Hermes is the god of the threshold, of messages carried between worlds; Hermes Trismegistus is the name the tradition gave to the mind that can carry meaning from the divine Nous into human words and back. When the messenger's planet seems to reverse, the tradition reads a specific instruction: the word you sent out is coming back to you. Read it again before you send it further.

3 times in 2027 the reading is asked for. And each time the retrograde runs the same direction through the elements — from a water sign back into the air sign before it: Pisces to Aquarius, Cancer to Gemini and Scorpio to Libra. Water is what was felt. Air is what was thought. Three times this year Mercury walks the feeling back to the thought that produced it and asks whether the thought was true.

None of this is a reason to hide for three weeks. Contracts get signed in retrogrades and hold; journeys get taken and arrive.
