Cancer's window spans 60° to 120°. Phase one, the modern addition, is the Moon's passage through Gemini; the midpoint is the Moon at 90°, the degree the Sun occupies at the June solstice; phase two is the Moon through Cancer until 120°, where Leo begins. Cancer is the only sign the Moon rules, so this is the one window where the transiting Moon returns to its own domicile — the tradition made much of that, and you may too. Cancer is Water, and its ruler is the Moon itself — the same Moon whose passage sets these dates. In the body-map Cancer holds the chest, the breasts and the stomach: the organs of nourishment, of taking in and holding. Carey read the sign as the mother, the vessel, and his salt for Cancer was calcium fluoride, the elastic tissue that lets a vessel stretch without tearing. Image, not prescription; but a precise one for what the window asks.

Astrologers read Cancer as relating to food the way it relates to everything — as a matter of security. The fridge is a form of shelter. So the water fast that later practice attaches to the window touches, in this reading, something older than hunger: the fear of not being provided for. Carey did not ask for that fast (God-Man, p. 103). The modern first half, Moon in Gemini, is airy and scattered, and the sign's reading has it restless without a cause. When the Moon crosses into Cancer the seed is said to be born, and for once the tide is running in your own sign — the Moon at home. The tradition's counsel for these days is stillness in the chest: no gluttony, as Carey has it, and no heavy conversations. Feelings will rise; in this reading that is what Water does when it is not being used to wash something down. Let them rise. The retention the tradition asks for is, in your case, mostly this: keeping what you feel instead of feeding it to someone else.
