Capricorn's window runs from 240° to 300° of the ecliptic. Phase one, the modern addition, is the Moon's transit of Sagittarius (240°–270°); the midpoint is the Moon's entry into Capricorn at 270° — the degree the Sun holds at the December solstice, the year's darkest point; phase two is the Moon through Capricorn to 300°, where Aquarius begins. Capricorn's cusp days are around December 21–22 and January 19–20. If your birthday falls within two days of either, the calendar date cannot settle whether the Sun was in Sagittarius, Capricorn or Aquarius; the ingress shifts by up to a day from year to year. Capricorn is Earth under Saturn, and in the body-map it holds the knees, the bones and the skin — the structure, the frame, the boundary. Carey's Capricorn salt was calcium phosphate, the bone-builder, and he read the sign as the place where spirit takes on the hardest form of matter. The midpoint of your window is the Moon crossing 270°, the solstice degree, the darkest point of the Sun's year. Your seed, in the tradition's picture, is born at the bottom of the descent.

That is fitting, because astrologers read Capricorn as already knowing how to go without; Saturn teaches scarcity early. Going without is not the difficulty. The difficulty is the opposite — letting it be soft. The modern first half puts the Moon in Sagittarius, hot and expansive, and this reading has a Saturn sign feel that fire as pressure to perform, to make the window a discipline among disciplines. The water fast later practice adds here is not Carey's, who wrote against fasting (God-Man, p. 103). Nothing to prove. Let it be imperfect. That is the harder instruction for you.

When the Moon crosses into Capricorn the seed is said to be born and begins to rise. The lit region is yours, the frame Saturn governs: knees, skeleton, skin. The tradition's counsel now is rest, which for a Capricorn is nearly a foreign language. Nothing heavy asked of the will. Retention in your sign means keeping the effort inside instead of spending it on control. Sit and let the bones hold you. They were built for it; you do not have to help.
