Libra's window spans 150° to 210°. Phase one, the modern addition, is the Moon's passage through Virgo; the midpoint is the Moon crossing 180° — directly opposite the zero point of Aries, the degree of the autumn equinox; phase two is the Moon crossing Libra to 210°, where Scorpio begins. Libra's cusp days fall around September 22–23 and October 22–23. If you were born within two days of either, the calendar date alone cannot decide between Virgo, Libra and Scorpio, because the Sun's ingress shifts by up to a day between years. Libra is Air ruled by Venus, and in the body-map it holds the kidneys and the lumbar spine — the small of the back, the organs that weigh and filter. The scales are not a metaphor here; the kidneys literally balance the body's water and salt. Carey's Libra salt was sodium phosphate, the acid-neutraliser — a symbol, he would insist, of the sign's work: taking what is sharp and bringing it back to level.

In astrological reading, eating is social for Libra; it is how peace is made and company kept. The water fast that later practice attaches to the window would take away the shared table; Carey himself did not ask for a fast (God-Man, p. 103). The modern first half puts the Moon in Virgo — exacting, particular — and a Venus-ruled sign is read as feeling criticised by that energy even when no one has said anything. Notice how much of your ordinary eating is an attempt to smooth something over.

When the Moon crosses into Libra the seed is said to be born, and the lit region is your own: the lower back, the kidneys. The tradition's counsel is lightness — nothing for the mind to weigh. For a Libra the deepest retention is of the verdict. For these days you do not have to decide who was right, what is fair, whether you were liked. Let the scales hang empty. What you may find is that the balance does not need your adjusting.
